Telenor expands role in climate resilience, disaster preparedness

KARACHI, JulY 09 :Telenor Pakistan is expanding its climate communication efforts beyond emergency alerts to support broader disaster preparedness and daily operations, said CEO Khurrum Ashfaque at the National Conference on Climate Challenges in Pakistan.

Highlighting the growing threat of climate change, he said that it is no longer a future concern but a pressing reality. “At Telenor, our focus is on enabling action—helping people, businesses, and institutions better understand and respond to climate risks,” he said.

He noted Telenor Pakistan’s contributions to national emergency efforts, including mobility tracking during the COVID-19 pandemic and collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) during the 2022 floods.

Building on this experience, the company is now exploring the development of a nationwide disaster communication system that can deliver geo-targeted early warnings and enable real-time coordination in crises.

Ashfaque also underscored the company’s progress in environmental sustainability. Since 2019, Telenor has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 23% and remains on track to meet its science-based climate targets.

He affirmed that climate action is deeply integrated into the company’s operations, supply chain, and values.

Telenor continues to invest in climate-resilient infrastructure, hosts expert forums, and promotes sustainable practices while reporting transparently on its progress. “Our goal is to keep advancing innovation, collaboration, and long-term impact in support of Pakistan’s climate resilience,” Ashfaque added
