Coldplay breaks Billions Club record on Spotify and takes over FC Barcelona jerseys

Spotify is once again bringing together record-breaking legends from the worlds of music and football, through its first-of-its-kind partnership with FC Barcelona

Spotify is once again bringing together record-breaking legends from the worlds of music and football, through its first-of-its-kind partnership with FC Barcelona. This time, the shirt of FC Barcelona will feature the logo of Coldplay, that is inspired by their 10th album Moon Music released October 4th which debuted at number 1 on Spotify’s weekly global charts.

This month, Coldplay has also made history by breaking the record for the most songs, by one group, to surpass a billion streams on Spotify. To honor this accomplishment, Spotify featuring Coldplay on the FC Barcelona shirt swap is a nod to their track “Viva la Vida,” one of Barca’s unofficial anthems during the 2008-2009 season. As of Wednesday, October 16th, Coldplay’s 2002 hit “Clocks” became the 12th song from the band’s discography to receive the streaming honor. Other songs in Coldplay’s discography holding the Billions Club record include “Yellow,” “A Sky Full of Stars,” and “Sparks” to name a few.

Like FC Barcelona, Coldplay brings together fans from across the world. This moment celebrates the unity of humanity and the joy felt in shared experiences – whether that be a football match or music concert. As an example of how the band unites people from across the world, the Moon Music logo that will feature on the FC Barcelona shirt was inspired by a design from a Coldplay fan.

The shirt will be worn for the El Clásico match when FC Barcelona take on Real Madrid on Oct 26th. Also wearing the shirt will be FC Barcelona Femení in their Liga F match against Eibar on Nov 2.

FC Barcelona will also share a special edition of the popular Barça Matchday playlist on Spotify featuring themed songs to motivate the players and fans in the build up to the game, which was curated by Coldplay.

Coldplay said: “We’re honoured that Spotify has chosen to feature our Moon Music design on the shirt of FC Barcelona. We’ve had a special relationship with the city and the club for many years. We’re also proud to support the UNHCR in their life-saving work to protect refugees and displaced people around the world. Heartfelt thanks to Spotify and FC Barcelona for making this happen.”
Speaking about the partnership, Marc Hazan, Vice President – Partnerships and Marketing, Spotify said: “Coldplay is one of the most beloved bands in the world on Spotify, and their storied connection to Barça runs deep. We are thrilled to celebrate that history with fans worldwide through the iconic Barça jersey. The release of Moon Music is a perfect moment to celebrate the power of football and music’s ability to bring people together.”

Juli Guiu, VP Marketing, FC Barcelona said: “We are delighted that through our partnership with Spotify, that Coldplay will feature on the FC Barcelona shirt for El Clásico. The band and the club have a mutual love which stretches back many years from the band visiting training sessions, to Barça players watching Coldplay live in Barcelona over the years, to the band’s music soundtracking some of the club’s best moments.”

The partnership between Barça and Spotify is a first-of-its-kind – you can read more about the partnerships here and check out the FC Barcelona hub on Spotify.
